It’s Saturday! The ELi team brought stories on local sports, city government and more this week, so start your weekend by catching up with our reporting.
The city is looking to hear from seniors about their needs, experiences.
At the start of September, the city released a survey that gauges the needs and feelings of older residents. City leaders are hopeful that the survey lets them know what is working for seniors in East Lansing, and what could be improved. It’s not just you, mosquitoes are getting worse.
You’re not imagining it, you’ve probably been getting more and more mosquito bites. As the climate has gotten warmer and wetter in Michigan, it has become a more favorable environment for the pests. City Council approves motel, raises concerns BWL rate increases.
At the Sept. 3 City Council meeting, Councilmember Mark Meadows used his public comment portion of the meeting to push back against rate increases from BWL. Meadows said BWL still offers the lowest utility rate in Michigan, but money raised in the increases will be used to construct a fossil fuel-powered plant. ELHS boys soccer team looks to continue its recent run of success.
After finishing atop its conference for three straight years, the ELHS boys soccer team will look to continue its winning ways this fall. Even with last season’s top goal scorers graduating, Head Coach Jeff Lyons is confident the team has the players to fill the void and compete at a high level. There’s a busy meeting week coming up.
Things will stay busy in city government next week, as there are five meetings on the docket. Monday (Sept. 9) The Human Rights Commission meets. Then on Tuesday (Sept. 10) City Council and the Downtown Management Board each gather. Thursday (Sept. 12) the Charter Review Committee and Historic District Commission have meetings. Additionally, there will be a Board of Education meeting on Monday (Sept. 9). School board meetings are held downstairs in the high school, starting at 7 p.m.
Broad Art Museum to host Fall Opening Party.
Friday (Sept. 13), the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum on the Michigan State University campus will host a fall party! According to the museum’s website, visitors are invited to check out new exhibits, enjoy music, participate in art-making activities and more. The party is scheduled to take place from 6-10 p.m. For more information or to register to attend the free party, head to the museum’s website.
Margaritas, cats and dogs event today!
Barrio Tacos in downtown East Lansing will be holding an adoption event and raising money for Happy Feet Pet Rescue. For every margarita sold, $1 will be donated to the rescue center and there will be dogs and cats at the event that are available for adoption. The event will be held today (Saturday, Sept. 7) from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, check out the event’s Facebook page here.
