Go Green! Go White!
It’s rivalry weekend in East Lansing, as the Michigan State University Spartans football team will travel to Ann Arbor to take on the University of Michigan Wolverines.
It was a light publishing week for ELi, as our team works on some longer stories and gears up for the looming election.
Read the ELi election guide before casting your ballot.
To help readers get to know what will be on the ballot at the Nov. 5 election, ELi published our election guide this week. The guide includes stories on some of the candidates for state and county elections, responses school board candidates gave to questions ELi asked them, information on Proposal 1 and more! Council votes to go forward with Northern Tier Trail extension.
Council voted to continue with a plan to expand the Northern Tier Trail from the Soccer Complex to Coolidge Road at the Oct. 15 City Council meeting. At the start of the meeting, it looked like council was set to delay the project for four years, which was recommended by staff. However, council opted to prioritize the trail and instructed staff to move forward with the project in a 3-2 vote. Read Managing Editor Luke Day’s story here.
October ends with a light week for meetings.
There is only one city meeting scheduled for next week, as the Folk Festival Committee will gather on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Hannah Community Center. The agenda for that meeting can be viewed here.
Additionally, there is a school board meeting on Monday (Oct. 28). That meeting will be held downstairs in the high school starting at 7 p.m. The agenda for that meeting can be found here.
ELPD to have extra patrols for today’s game.
With the history of Michigan State University students setting furniture on fire after big sports games, ELPD is taking extra precautions. ELPD Public Information Officer Lt. Adrian Ojerio responded to an email from ELi with a message from the department:
“The East Lansing Police Department will be staffing extra patrols to deter illegal and dangerous activities like drunk driving and assaults,” he wrote. “The Spartan Nation has been helping by following the simple saying, ‘If you see something, Say something.’ This has helped ELPD, prevent physical fights, reduce drunk drivers on the road, and get assistance to those who might have overindulged.
“As a reminder, arson of furniture is a crime! Anyone caught or recorded on any device or platform will face prosecution and additional school sanctions if they are a student, this includes anyone assisting with making the fire. We work closely with MSU to maintain the positive image that 99% of the Spartans represent.
“We hope for a wonderful win and a happy and safe celebration. Again - If you see something, Say something.”
ELPL to host a community bike ride on Monday.
The East Lansing Public Library will host the final of three community bike rides Monday, Oct. 28 at 4:30 p.m. Following a brief safety talk, participants will ride to the MSU Bikes Service Center, where the center’s Sustainable Transportation Manager Tim Potter will join. Potter will then guide the group on a route that will include the new Hagadorn Road configuration. Read more about the event here.
Two Early Voting Centers are now open in East Lansing!
Today, the Hannah Community Center’s Early Voting Center will open. The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 3. Residents are able to register and vote at the center.
Additionally, an Early Voting Center at WKAR studios in the Communication Arts and Sciences building on MSU’s campus began operating on Monday, Oct. 21. This station will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Nov. 3. On Election Day, the station will be an Election Day Vote Center, where residents can register and vote.
